CEO statement from our 2010 Annual Report – Succeeding by creating value for our clients
"In 2010 we worked with leaders and organisations around
the world to bring about real, lasting change across a range of complex
projects", Alan Middleton, Chief Executive Officer
This
has been a challenging year for our clients and for PA. We have been
successful because we have stayed focused on what we do best –
delivering real value for the leaders of today.
And
we have taken a careful look at ourselves – what drives us forward and
how we approach our markets – to ensure that we are in a good position
to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
Together with our clients
In
2010 we worked with leaders and organisations around the world to bring
about real, lasting change across a range of complex projects.
We
secured annual savings of 175 million Danish kroner for Post Danmark
through more effective workload forecasting across 11 million items of
mail per day. Our innovative work on the UK Identity and Passport
Service’s world-class biometric visa programme ensured the agency can
process over five million applicants in a year at £160 million less
cost. And our work with BAE Systems delivered more than 30% cost savings
on specialised components for civil and military avionics products. > click here to read more
Together with our people
This
was another year in which I am proud to say that our people delivered.
As always, we have taken a pragmatic and collaborative approach to
projects such as our support for the UK National Health Service’s need
to design – in a matter of just a few months – a single commissioning
system for postgraduate medical and dental education in London. The
health projects we have been working on have been successful because of
the way that teams of PA people with project management and health
expertise have worked together with our clients.
We
continued to invest in both our people and our clients. During the year
we provided 600 internal learning and development events and transferred
our skills to 600 clients worldwide.
I thank everyone in PA for their hard work and commitment in 2010.
Together with our communities and the environment
In
2010 our people have offered skills, equipment and money to contribute
to the communities where we work. For instance, our consulting expertise
has benefited such diverse organisations as local government councils,
industry campaigning bodies such as the UK Automotive Council, and
charities such as Christian Action Research and Education (CARE).
We
have also made real progress in reducing our environmental impact
through carbon reduction measures, more recycling and improving our
energy efficiency. PA’s broad expertise in green technological
innovation ranges from developing concept design for the fabrication of
large-scale solar energy projects in the US to reducing costs in the
manufacturing process for lithium-ion batteries for Magna Steyr in
Germany.
Together for the future
We
reviewed our strategy in 2010, leading us to be more carefully and
tightly focused on those areas where we make a real difference for our
clients and in which we will grow. We enter 2011 well positioned to
combine our public and private sector expertise with offerings in the
areas of business transformation, IT and technology disciplines to
support the needs of our clients in the Nordic, Europe, United States
and Gulf markets. This is leading to a PA that is even stronger, is
highly profitable and does unique work for a client list that continues
to build in quality.
I believe that makes the year ahead an exciting one for PA and for our clients.
Our latest thinking | Life after PA | PA Retirers' Association
Is your business fit for the future?
During the downturn, many organisations put themselves on a ‘diet’ of
intensive cost-cutting, which stood them in good stead at the time,
allowing many to perform above (admittedly low) expectations.
However, in the longer term, cost-cutting is not an adequate strategy
for success. For one thing, there can only be one lowest-cost player in
each market at any one time, and the position may be hotly contested.
For another, there are better ways to establish and maintain competitive
position.
For long-term competitiveness, it is not enough to simply slim down.
Organisations should implement a more comprehensive ‘fitness programme’
to build the strategy and organisation required for future success. To

Greening business - prospering through policy and technology
Energy, transport and manufacturing sectors account for the majority
of global CO2 emissions. However In the current tough economic climate,
organisations are facing pressure from government, shareholders and
consumers to reduce emissions while increasing profitability.
Our Greening Business strategy sets out the four key methods by which
private and public sector clients can fulfill these expectations on
prosperity. To find out more around our thinking in this area please

Being smart: creating opportunities from global trends
Global trends such as the financial crisis, climate change and the
ageing population pose huge challenges for organisations, yet
established approaches to such challenges no longer work.
How can organisations turn these challenges to their advantage? We
believe that the answer lies in how people and machines are connected to
each other.
Harnessing the data associated with everyday activities will allow
the development of innovative products and services, and enable them to
be delivered in new ways, through collaborative business models. To find

Developing the healthcare of the future
Far reaching reforms are fundamentally changing the relationships
between key players across the world of Healthcare. One of the key
drivers for the future lies in using information to create more
personalised care and standardisation at the same time. We are
witnessing the “industrial revolution” of Healthcare, enabled by IT.
This will increase access, drive up quality and reduce the overall cost
of care.
We see four key themes emerging that are critical to this change:
- Delivering health reform moving toward universal access and healthier communities
- Improving outcomes through the use of health information and enhanced process / cost efficiency
- Delivering “Intelligent Healthcare: Customer-centric innovation in health”
- Driving new business models across Healthcare through Personalised Medicine

From playwriter of Hollywood productions to manager of the Swedish Taxation Authority´s shared service centre, our alumni are certainly demonstrating that basic consulting skills can be applied in many different areas. We always feel a pride when we see former PA employees succeed in new challenging positions.
The PA Retirers' Association (PARA) is a great way to keep in contact with ex-PA colleagues and receive occasional updates on news about PA itself. Over 500 PA pensioners and alumni enjoy being members of PARA.
The PARAnews newsletter is distributed three times each year, and contains a wide variety of articles on subjects ranging from updates on the pension scheme to members’ experiences and activities.
PARA organises regional social events, usually lunch-time gatherings in pubs or restaurants, that are becoming increasingly popular. The Annual General Meetings present a special opportunity to get together with former colleagues from far and wide. There is also an annual golf tournament in the UK.
Membership of PARA is open to everyone who has spent a considerable proportion of their career in PA, or their widowed spouse.
