At the 2010 Spring Partner Elections, Bill Dalton of the Federal & Defense Services practice was elected to Partner. Harnessing the Power of Open Innovation
Open innovation (OI) helps companies access new technologies and innovation at a faster rate and lower cost than can be achieved internally. Yet many companies have not yet developed ways of maximising its potential.
To help identify the key success factors for Open Innovation, PA Consulting Group has compiled a report drawing on the experience of leading companies. We talked to R&D and marketing professionals in sectors ranging from pharmaceutical and medical device to large engineering and consumer products.

Future of Healthcare
The future of healthcare lies in using information to create more personalised care. This can then increase access, drive up quality and control costs more.
For many years, the trends in healthcare have looked unsustainable. Ageing populations mean more people need care, while a declining workforce means fewer people to pay for, and actually deliver, that care.
At the same time, there has been an inexorable rise in the costs of care as a result of increases in the number of long-term conditions and from advances in medicine. Up to now it has been possible to absorb these costs incrementally. However, that has meant that either a significant proportion of the population loses access to care for all but emergency procedures, or access to treatments is rationed.
In this publication, we recommend that the healthcare sector can meet these challenges by:
• ensuring productivity rises significantly to avoid unaffordable healthcare
• harnessing technology to manage and modify medication, monitor compliance and trigger reimbursement
• adopting new approaches to risk and return
• empowering people to manage their own health and wellness
• transforming healthcare delivery from volume of care to quality of care.
PA/Harvey Nash 2010 CIO Survey
To help their organizations emerge from recession, CIOs need to cut costs and invest in innovation – not just do one or the other. This is the main finding from the latest PA Consulting Group and Harvey Nash CIO survey. PA and Harvey Nash surveyed 2,665 senior IT professionals from public and private sector companies across the UK, US and Europe.
The survey shows that IT departments are falling into two categories - 'cost cutters' and 'innovators' - depending on the wider fortunes of their parent companies. But in PA's view, just doing one or the other is not enough; even those CIOs who already have sufficient liquidity to invest run the risk of failing to achieve the maximum possible return on their investments if basic operational efficiencies have not been achieved first. The emphasis for CIOs should therefore be on cost cutting first, and fast, to free up budget and resource to invest in innovation.
A full version of the survey report can be found at the PA web site.
10 June 2010 – New York alumni event
On the 10th of June over 40 alumni and current PA people came together on a gorgeous New York rooftop bar for the annual New York alumni reunion. The event was a great opportunity for all to reconnect with old friends and colleagues and although the rain threatened to be a challenge for the third year in a row we ended up with a glorious evening, perfect for the setting.

The PA Retirers' Association (PARA) is a great way to keep in contact with ex-PA colleagues and receive occasional updates on news about PA itself. Over 500 PA pensioners and alumni enjoy being members of PARA.
The PARAnews newsletter is distributed three times each year, and contains a wide variety of articles on subjects ranging from updates on the pension scheme to members’ experiences and activities.
PARA organises regional social events, usually lunch-time gatherings in pubs or restaurants, that are becoming increasingly popular. The Annual General Meetings present a special opportunity to get together with former colleagues from far and wide. There is also an annual golf tournament in the UK.
Membership of PARA is open to everyone who has spent a considerable proportion of their career in PA, or their widowed spouse.
